Travis Heights is a Good Hood
Share+

Travis Heights is a historic Austin neighborhood that brings landmark mansions, smaller homes and stylish apartments together just east of Austin’s famed South Congress Avenue. The stores, restaurants and music venues of South Congress never fail to entertain, while the parks and green spaces allow an escape from city life for a moment.

The neighborhood’s Big Stacy Pool is a popular destination for residents seeking to relax and cool off, and Lady Bird Lake, a meer 1/2 mile up Congress Avenue, offers recreation for outdoor enthusiasts. Downtown Austin, and all it has to offer, is a short trip crossing over the lake which offers many residents a beautiful view of the Capitol and the stunning downtown landscape. Down Riverside Drive you will find Austin’s famous Greenbelt and Zilker Park.A main attraction of Travis Heights is its “walking distance” to the thriving South Congress Avenue, often referred to as SOCO. SOCO is known for it’s hip cafes, music, coffee shops, boutique hotels and funky “local” retail shops. For dog enthusiasts, Travis Heights also has Norwood Estate Park at Riverside Drive and IH35 which has been designated a dog-friendly, leash free park where many neighborhood residents gather with their pets after work and on weekends.Whether you are seeking a quiet neighborhood or an urban hotspot, you will find a place in Travis Heights.

Neighborhood ReviewsTravis Heights
Chris Goyer

What made you choose to move to Travis Heights?

We moved to Travis Heights because my family wanted to be back living close in to town with less driving in Austin.

What do you love about living in Travis Heights?

We love the close proximity to downtown and to my office, which is in walking and biking distance from home. Also, Travis Heights is very eclectic with a diversity of styles: I love seeing the older and traditional homes right next door to very modern architecture. It also has a very nice parks and pools throughout the neighborhood. In the afternoons we can walk or ride bikes to our favorite restaurants for happy hour and dinner and then stroll down South Congress and shop in the locally-owned stores. Essentially, we can walk or ride to everything – dinner, shopping, grocery – it is a much more active lifestyle with no driving.

What do you see as the primary benefits to your lifestyle?

The primary benefit we have is that we feel very close-in to the vibrant lifestyle of Austin and we now live a really active, outdoor life.

Has your lifestyle changed since you moved there?

Yes, we lived in Westlake on a busy street and we had to drive everywhere, which was not ideal for a family with kids. Now we can get out, be healthier and more active. I ride my bike a lot and no longer have to put my bike in my car to be able to ride…I simply hop on and get after it!

What are your favorite restaurants in the area?

We love going to Perlas and sitting on the outdoor patio for cocktails and then walking down to Vespaio for a fabulous dinner.

What other restaurants and shops do you and your family love?

I love shopping at Stag, lunch at South Congress Cafe, Hopdoddy for a great burger, and Homeslice for some local pizza.
We love living in Travis Heights because as opposed to living in a condo, we have the same access to the lifestyle but can also have a back yard and a dog for our family. We have the best of both worlds.
